Installing and updating drivers in 7
GUIDELINES:

Install them in safe mode if you can. Otherwise, use safe mode if a normal 7 install fails. If you've built a new pc, then you'll most likely install the drivers in 7, not safe mode.
Don't bother with driver programs. Get them yourself. Do you trust a random app to stick a driver in the right place and ensure its installed correctly on top of a driver install? Use them only - only - if you really can't find drivers and then uninstall them.
Reboot. Always reboot after each driver. Even better after you install them, reboot again later in the day.
Make sure it matches your hardware and for laptops, the model, and whether its x86 or x64.
Create a folder in your browser with links to your hardware and check this once a week.
Use Driver Sweeper for your graphics card and sound drivers. This will clean up any leftover junk in safe mode.
Try and find WHQL - Windows Hardware Quality Labs - drivers that have been certified by Microsoft.
Keep a backup of the latest drivers on an external hard disk in case 7 dies. If you use a backed up image, then recent drivers are available.

FINDING & UPDATING DRIVERS:

Finding drivers is usually easy. First you need to find out what is in your pc. I'd recommend HWInfo32. Install it and open it. Note the chipset and BIOS type/date then close the summary window. Then open up the tabs:

The drivers you want to update:

Chipset
BIOS
NIC (Network Interface Device) for Ethernet and Wireless.
Sound
Graphics Card
DVD drive firmware if necessary
Anything proprietary if necessary, such as Webcam etc.

Once you know the drivers, google any with the manufacturer such as nvidia driver and then bookmark the link in a folder. Download the drivers and then reboot after each one. If you have any problems open a thread in the drivers sub-forum or PM me. The BIOS will be from the PC manufacturer or the motherboard manufacturer and chipset most likely from AMD, Intel, Nvidia, or SiS:

DRIVER SWEEPER:

Use Driver Sweeper if you are updating some drivers. Driver Sweeper is a program that will remove leftovers from key drivers, namely graphics and sound. The first thing to do is to ensure that you have new and possibly old drivers on hand. Also, if you have 2 graphics cards - I have Intel and Nvidia in my ultraportable - don't do this. The manufacturer will most likely have different instructions. Otherwise, this should work, along with SLI/Crossfire. Uninstall the drivers from control panel with the exception of ATI drivers. If you have ATI run the new installer, uninstall the old drivers, reboot, and then use Driver Sweeper. Reboot into 7 again and then re-run the Catalyst installer, this time choosing to install the new driver. For anything else uninstall anything other related like control panels. Reboot at the end:

Reboot into safe mode and then run driver sweeper.

Select Analyse and then clean - choose the right drivers you want removed! It will be all of them, just select the right ones above. Reboot once more into safe mode and install the newest drivers. Then reboot into Windows. Use driver sweeper if it can clean up any of your drivers. This will most likely be sound and display, but the app is updated and some more support will come for other bits of hardware.

DEVICE MANAGER UPDATES:

In device manager, right click the device and select update, try the internet and then try choosing from installed drivers. Also, use the Unknown Devices app from Halfdone Development to identify any hardware (usually) that has a question mark.

Otherwise install any drivers over old ones unless you find different instructions for the piece of hardware. The .txt readme will have instructions or the site. Some installers uninstall old drivers, tell you to reboot, then run the installer again to install the new ones. After you install graphics drivers re-run the Windows Experience Index assessment. If you follow these simple steps your PC will run better and driver problems shouldn't exist.. If you can't get any 7 drivers, then it might time for new hardware that has support.

How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+

Part 1: Preparing the Media

Method 1: With a USB Memory Stick

1. Download the latest version of the "Auto-installer for USB Key (Win 9x/2k/xp/7)" from this link: Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

2. Plug in an empty USB key drive. Size is no concern, as the actual files take up 180 KB of space.

3. Go into the .zip folder you downloaded, and double-click on the .exe file inside.

4. Follow the setup utility. To reduce the risk of problems, it is advised to format the drive.

Method 2: With a CD

1. Download the latest version of the "Precompiled Boot ISO (.zip)Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

You want the "Precompiled Boot ISO (.zip)".

from this link: 2. Open the .zip file you downloaded, and then drag the .ISO file inside onto the Desktop.

3. Right-click on the ISO, and select Open with>Windows Disc Image Burner.

4. Insert a blank CD into the CD drive, and make sure the correct Disc burner is selected.

5. Click on "Burn".

Now the CD is ready to use.

Part 2: Testing

1. With the CD in the drive, or the USB key inserted, reboot your computer. If Memtest does not automatically boot, go into the BIOS and change the CD drive or USB drive to be the first to boot.

2. Memtest will immediately start testing as soon as it boots. No attendance is needed.

3. Let it run until at least 7 passes are completed, or errors are found (whichever comes first). The longer you run it, the better.

Seven passes will take several hours, depending on your amount of RAM. It is advised to leave it running overnight.

Part 3: If You Have Errors:

The goal is to test all the RAM sticks and all the motherboard slots.

Check your motherboard manual to ensure the RAM sticks are in the recommended motherboard slots. Some motherboards have very specific slots required for the number of RAM sticks installed.

If you get errors, stop the test and continue with the next step.

1. Remove all but one stick of RAM from your computer (this will be RAM stick #1), and run Memtest86 again, for 7 passes.

Be sure to note the RAM stick, use a piece of tape with a number, and note the motherboard slot.

If this stick passes the test then go to step #3.

2. If RAM stick #1 has errors, repeat the test with RAM stick #2 in the same motherboard slot.

If RAM stick #2 passes, this indicates that RAM stick #1 may be bad. If you want to be absolutely sure, re-test RAM stick #1 in another known good slot.

If RAM stick #2 has errors, this indicates another possible bad RAM stick, a possible motherboard slot failure or inadequate settings.

3. Test the next stick of RAM (stick #2) in the next motherboard slot.

If this RAM stick has errors repeat step #2 using a known good stick if possible, or another stick.

If this RAM stick has no errors and both sticks failed in slot#1, test RAM stick #1 in this slot.

4. If you find a stick that passes the test, test it in all the other motherboard slots.

If Part 2 testing shows errors, and all tests in Part 3 show errors, you will need to test the RAM sticks in another computer and/or test other RAM in your computer to identify the problem.

In this way, you can identify whether it is a bad stick of RAM, a bad motherboard, or incompatibility between the sticks.

OPTION ONE

To Enable Driver Verifier

1. Start typing verifier.exe into the start menu, and open Verifier.

2. Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)", and hit Next.

3. Make sure Standard settings, Force pending I/O requests, and IRP Logging are selected, and hit Next.

4. Select "Select driver names From a list", and hit Next.

5. Click on "Provider" at the top to sort the list by manufacturer. Select all drivers not provided by Microsoft Corporation. The only other drivers that do not get selected are amdxata.sys, and secdrv.sys.

6. Press Next, and OK to the resulting window.

After a reboot, driver verifier should be enabled.

OPTION TWO

To Disable Driver Verifier

1. Start typing verifier.exe into the start menu, and open Verifier.

2. Select "Delete existing settings"

If you cannot get into Windows to turn off Verifier, try using Safe Mode.

SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD
When you install Win XP, setup can not find your Hard Drive.

1) Download & Install nLite
nLite - Deployment Tool for the bootable Unattended Windows installation

2) Make a new folder for your Windows XP image.
Note: for this example, I am using the name Win XP Sata.

3) Insert XP CD & start nLite

4) Click Next.

5) Choose your Windows XP image folder, & Click Next, than OK.
Note: nLite will put the image into your folder.

6) Click Next.

7) Click Next.

8) Choose Integrate Drivers & Create Bootable ISO

9) Click Next.

10) Copy & Paste your Sata Driver to your image folder.
Note: for this example, I am using Promise Fastrak 376.

11) Click Insect, than Single Driver.

12) Locate your Sata Setup Inf file.
Click Open, than OK.
Note: for this example the file is called fasttx2k.
Note: for this example, I am using Promise Fastrak 376.

13) Click Next.

14) Click Yes, than Next.

15) Choose Direct Burn.
Click Burn, than Yes.
Note: nLite will now burn your new CD.

16) Click Next.

17) Click Finish.

Your Sata drive will now show up in setup.

How to Stress Test your CPU for Stability and Heat Problems

1. Download the appropriate 32-bit or 64-bit Windows version of Prime95 from this link: Free Software - GIMPS

You can skip down to step 2 on that page; it is not necessary to register, if all you want to do is torture test.

2. Run the Prime95.exe file. If the UAC warning appears, click "Yes" to allow it.

3. Select "Just Stress Testing" in the first window that appears.

4. Select "Small FFTs", or whatever tests someone asks you to run. Prime95 will automatically select the maximum number of threads reported by Windows in the "Number of threads to run" box.

5. Keep an eye on your temperatures, and stop the test if the machine starts to overheat.

6. Leave the test running for up to 6 hours, unless errors occur sooner. Errors will show up by one or more of the workers stopping.

Great Gurus Note

Gurus should know that as with all hardware tests, Prime95 is not fail-safe. If the CPU passes for 6 hours with no errors, it is most likely to be stable. Unfortunately, it sometimes makes mistakes and gives a clean bill of health to a faulty CPU.

2. Remove the old silver plate from the back, and put in the one that came with your motherboard

3. Now place the motherboard to match the screw holes in the case, and the silver plate at the back
